About the studio

No. Gabriele Paolo Jewellery is a bespoke fine jewellery practice led by Gabriele Gucci. We make engagement rings, wedding bands, eternity rings, pendants and earrings, and we remodel, repair and resize. Mokume-gane is our speciality, not our limit.

Yes, by appointment. The studio is in the Lincolnshire Wolds, just outside Louth.

No. Consultations are free, in person at the studio or by video call.

Yes, after an assessment. We can't know a piece's history, so we can't be responsible for existing weaknesses we couldn't reasonably have found, such as old solder joints or hidden porosity. We'll tell you about anything we notice before we begin.

Mokume-gane

Mokume-gane is a 17th-century Japanese metalworking technique in which sheets of precious metal are fused together under heat and pressure into a single billet, then carved and worked to reveal extraordinary wood-grain patterns within the layered metal.

The grain pattern depends on how the metalsmith works the billet, the sequence of layers, the heat applied and the natural variation in the metal. Even with identical materials, the result is always different. It's a metallurgical fact, not a marketing claim.

We can guide the style, favouring tighter wood-grain or broader wave patterns, but the exact result is always a collaboration between the metalsmith and the metal itself. This unpredictability is part of what makes the craft so extraordinary.

18ct gold with silver; silver with palladium; 18ct gold with silver and palladium; and 18ct gold with palladium.

Each billet is fused under heat and pressure into one solid piece of metal, not layers stuck together, and it is made for everyday wear like any other fine jewellery ring. Over time the softer metals wear slightly faster than the harder ones, which can gently raise the pattern.

The pattern comes from the colours of the metals themselves, brought out by an etch as part of the finish. We don't make silver-and-copper Mokume-gane, because it reacts with wear and the pattern fades. If a ring is badly damaged and needs restoring, the etch can be re-applied.

Yes, if it is 18ct. We don't make Mokume-gane in 9ct gold.

Commissioning

It begins with a consultation, followed by design and (for Mokume-gane) billet composition, the making, hallmarking, and finally delivery. The full process is detailed on our Bespoke page.

The making typically takes three to eight weeks once your design is approved, depending on the piece, with hallmarking and finishing adding a week or two. From first consultation to delivery, most commissions take six to twelve weeks.

Every piece is priced individually, depending on the metals, design and stones. As a guide, most commissions begin in the low thousands. We talk about budget openly at your consultation.

A 50% deposit confirms your commission; the balance is due on completion, before delivery. We accept bank transfer and card. We don't currently offer payment plans.

Yes, until we've bought materials for your piece. After that, a change may leave materials unused, and their cost would be charged.

Yes. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium can be melted down and forged or cast into a new classic design, and inherited stones can be reset. 18ct gold can also go into a Mokume-gane billet. We assess every piece first.

Yes, including rings made by other jewellers.

Yes, priced on application.

Sizing & fit

We'll size you at your consultation, or a local jeweller can measure you.

Making a ring smaller is usually straightforward. Making it larger is more limited, often to one or two sizes depending on the design, and rings set with stones are much harder to resize. Please confirm your size carefully before making begins.

From 2mm to 8mm. For Mokume-gane we recommend 3mm or wider, because narrower bands show little of the pattern.

Give us your best estimate. A ring they already wear on that finger is the best guide. The first resize is complimentary, within the limits above.

Materials & sourcing

18ct gold, platinum, palladium and sterling silver. Platinum is used for classic pieces, not Mokume-gane.

Our gold and silver are 100% recycled, as certified by our supplier, and our other metals are typically recycled too.

Both. We increasingly recommend lab-grown, which are physically and chemically diamond. Stones come with their laboratory report where relevant.

Delivery, care & returns

UK addresses only, by tracked, insured delivery.

Within three to five working days.

Every piece arrives in a Gabriele Paolo Jewellery keepsake box with its invoice and, for set stones, the laboratory grading report. The piece itself carries its UK hallmark. Independent valuations can be arranged at additional cost.

Yes. Every Gabriele Paolo Jewellery piece is hallmarked at a UK Assay Office, the official certification of precious metal content.

Clean gently with a soft cloth and warm soapy water, and avoid harsh chemicals. Every metal develops its own patina with wear, just as it would on its own: silver darkens, and gold and platinum soften to a satin sheen. Every piece includes lifetime inspections: the first year's inspection and refinish are complimentary, later inspections start from £30, and you cover postage.

Ready-to-wear pieces can be cancelled within 14 days of delivery; you pay return postage (see our Terms and cancellation form). Bespoke pieces are made for you, so the 14-day right doesn't apply. If you cancel a commission, we refund your deposit less costs already incurred. Your legal rights if a piece is faulty are unaffected.
