Hallmarking

Hallmarking

Hallmarking is the independent testing and marking of precious metal, carried out by the UK's Assay Offices. It is one of the oldest forms of consumer protection in Britain, and a guarantee that the metal in your piece is exactly what we say it is.

Our pieces

Every piece we make in gold, silver, platinum or palladium is hallmarked at a UK Assay Office. Our sponsor's mark, GPG, is registered with the Birmingham and London Assay Offices.

What the marks mean

  • Sponsor's mark: the registered mark of the maker. Ours is GPG.
  • Fineness mark: the precious metal content in parts per thousand, for example 925 for sterling silver, 750 for 18ct gold, and 950 for platinum.
  • Assay Office mark: shows which of the four UK Assay Offices tested and marked the piece.

Optional marks, such as a date letter, may also be applied.

Exemption weights

By law, articles below these weights do not have to be hallmarked: gold 1g, silver 7.78g, platinum 0.5g, palladium 1g.
